The Minister of State for Communications and
Information Technology Shri Sachin Pilot informed the Rajya Sabha that India’s proposal at the session of United Nations Commission
for Science and Technology Development (CSTD) on 18th May 2012 in Geneva
was a reiteration of the statement made in the 66th Session of the
United Nations General Assembly in October, 2011 under the Agenda Item
"Information and Communication Technology for Development" which , inter
alia, asked CSTD to establish an open ended Working Group to discuss
the establishment of a Committee for Internet Related Policies (CIRP).
The proposal was prepared by Ministry of External Affairs and was
endorsed by Department of Electronics and Information Technology. The
proposal is as per the mandate enshrined in the Tunis Agenda of Enhanced
Cooperation and is accordingly a step forward towards the
democratization of the global internet related public policy issues.
The proposal was in consultation with Brazil and South Africa.
The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has
been interacting with representatives from the Civil Society and
Advocacy Groups as well as with Industry Associations regularly. A
meeting involving, industry, civil society and Government was held in
the Department on 9th May, 2012.
