The UN Security Council on 31 May 2013 imposed sanctions on the Syrian rebel group, Al-Nusra Front on account of its links with Al-Qaeda. The move comes after the UN sanctions committee, chaired by Australian Ambassador Gary Quinlan voted to blacklist the group due to its terror links with Al-Qaeda-related individuals and entities.

Its bank accounts will be frozen and the members of organization will be banned from travelling. Al-Nusra has been listed as a terrorist organization by the United States since December due to its Al Qaeda links. Although it has been at the forefront in the fight against the Syrian regime; its ultra conservative views, insistence on Islamic state in Syria and allegiance to the terror outfit, Al Qaeda have raised concerns over its role in Syria. The sanctions by the security council are a reflection of these concerns.
