2013 has been declared as ‘Water Conservation Year’

2013 has been declared as ‘Water Conservation Year’ by the Union government to battle the deepening water conflicts and water tables. India has more than 18 per cent of the world’s population, but only 4 per cent of the world’s renewable water resources with 2.4 per cent of the world’s land area. There are further limits on utilisable quantities of water owing to uneven distribution over time, as 75 per cent annual rainfall is received in just four months. Also, region wise it varies from 10 cm rainfall in Rajasthan to 1,000 cm in the North Eastern Region.
