Chennai based
Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) scientist has been selected for the
UNESCO'S Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) awards. V M Sathish Kumar, works with the Southern Regional Center of ZSI in Chennai, was selected as one among the 12 international scientists for their projects on ecosystems, natural resources and biodiversity.
Kumar has been selected for his research on developing strategies and a regulatory framework for the sustainable fishing of sea cucumbers in the Gulf of Manner biosphere reserve. He is the only scientist selected from India for the awards announced under 'Laureates of Young Scientists and Michel Batisse Awards' category.
The award was announced by the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme of UNESCO (MAB) in Paris.
Since 1989, the Man and the Biosphere Programme has been awarding yearly scholarships of up to US$5,000 to ten young researchers, to encourage them to work on ecosystems, natural resources and biodiversity. Since 2010, two special fellowships are also being awarded under the programme.
