Japan has decided to cancel research whaling Programme in the Antarctic for the fiscal year 2014-15. But Japan will continue its research whaling programme in other areas including the northern Pacific. Japan also has a coastal whaling program that is not covered by a commercial whaling ban.
The Hague-based ICJ issued a landmark ruling that found the Antarctic programme was a commercial activity disguised as science and ordered Japan to revoke existing whaling licences.
The next Antarctic hunt would have started in late 2014, while the most recent finished in March 2014.
