The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated India's first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) at Shibpur, Howrah in West Bengal on 24 August 2014.
While inaugurating the IIEST, President Pranab Mukherjee emphasized that the state level institutions need to be prioritized as these institutions account for 96 percent of higher education capacity.
The President also emphasized for the synergy between academia and industry. He called for the promotion of higher education in India's academic institutions and development of core competencies.
IIEST Shibpur
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, formerly known as Bengal Engineering and Science University, was established in 1856. It is the second oldest institution for engineering education in India.
IIEST is a public institution for research and education in engineering science and technology. In March 2014 the institute got national status by amending National Institutes of Technology and Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007. It was renamed to IIEST Shibpur from Bengal Engineering and Science University.
IIEST Shibpur would be addressing global challenges in the areas of renewable energy, water technology, medical and environmental sciences, Disaster Management, Remote-sensing, Space Technology, Biochemical sensors, Structural Engineering and Embedded Systems.
