The Government has announced National Sports Awards for the year 2014. It has received number of nominations for the National Sports Awards – Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Dhyan Chand Award, and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar. These nominations were carefully scrutinized by the panel of eminent sportspersons and persons related to sports. Kapil Dev headed selection Committee for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Awards, Ajitpal Singh headed Committee for Dronacharya Awards and Ajit Mohan Saran, Secretary (Sports) headed Selection Committee for Dhyan Chand Awards and for Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar.
After due scrutiny of the committees’ recommendations, the Government has approved the names of the following sportspersons:
Arjuna Awards: Abhishek Verma (Archery), Tintu Luka (Athletics), H.N. Girisha(Para-Athletics), V. Diju (Badminton), Geetu Anna Jose (Basketball), Jai Bhagwan (Boxing), R. Ashwin (Cricket), Anirban Lahiri (Golf), Mamta Pujari (Kabaddi), Saji Thomas (Rowing), Heena Sidhu (Shooting), Anaka Alankamony (Squash), Tom Joseph (Volleyball), Renu Bala Chanu (Weightlifting) and Sunil Kumar Rana (Wrestling)
Dronacharya Awards: Mahabir Prasad (Wrestling), N. Lingappa (Athletics – Lifetime), G. Manoharan (Boxing – Lifetime), Gurcharan Singh Gogi (Judo – Lifetime) and Jose Jacob (Rowing – Lifetime)
Dhyan Chand Awards: Gurmail Singh (Hockey), K.P. Thakkar (Swimming (Diving)), and Zeeshan Ali (Tennis)
Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar• Employment of sports persons and sports welfare measures: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC)
• Community Sports - identification and nurturing of budding /young talent: Jindal Steel Works (JSW)
• Establishment and Management of sports academies of excellence: Guru Hanuman Akhara, Delhi
• Other forms of sports activities not covered in the four categories mentioned in the schemes: Child Link Foundation of India (Magic Bus)
No sportsperson has been recommended for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna 2014.
Like previous years, this year also the awardees will receive their awards from the President of India on August 29, National Sports Day. Arjuna award is given to sportspersons who consistently gives outstanding performance for four years, Dronacharya Award for coaches for producing medal winners at prestigious international sports events, Dhyan Chand Award for life time contribution to sports development and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar is given to the corporate entities (both in private and public sector) and individuals who have played a visible role in the area of sports promotion and development and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years immediately preceding the year during which award is to be given.
