Government has announced Lt Gen Dalbir Singh’s name as the next Army Chief to succeed Gen Bikram Singh, after the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) gave its approval. He will have tenure of 30 months as the Chief of the force when he takes over from Gen Singh who retires on July 31. On the principle of merit Lt Gen Singh has been recommended for the top post by the defence ministry.
Lt Gen Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, who is currently the Vice Chief of Army Staff, was commissioned in the Army on June 16, 1974. In his 40 years long career, he has held various Command and Staff appointments. He was a Company Commander in 'Op Pawan' in Sri Lanka and commanded 53 Infantry Brigade which was committed in counter insurgency operations in the Kashmir Valley from July 2003 to March 2005. He holds the distinction of commanding 8 Mountain Division in Kargil from October 2007 to December 2008.
He has attended various career courses in India and abroad including National Defence College, Long Defence Management Course and Senior Command Courses, and Executive Course in USA in 2005.
