GI CERTIFICATE FOR HYDERABADI HALEEM

‘Haleem', the delicacy during the Ramzan period will now be called ‘Hyderabad Haleem' after it was given geographical indication status by the Geographical Indications (GI) of Government of India.

The GI certificate was presented to the Hyderabad Haleem Makers' Association by P.H. Kurian, Controller General of Patents, Designs, Trademarks and Registrar of Geographical Indications on Saturday evening.

A beaming association president M.A. Majeed, who received the certification at a glittering function, hoped the new certification would bring more name to ‘Hyderabad Haleem' and increase the sales world over. The certificate would also act as a perfect marketing tool to further popularise the delicacy.

Uniqueness

“Geographical indication status is given to a product, which has uniqueness and is prepared in one region of the country. However, it is not a patent which is given to inventions. ‘Haleem' makers claimed that the scrumptious food is prepared through special process in the State capital since decades,” Mr. Kurian explained. He said 26 products, including famous Kondapalli toys in the State, were given GI certificates.

“The certificate does not bar anyone from preparing ‘Haleem' but they cannot market it as Hyderabad Haleem,” he said. From now onwards, the makers have to follow all the prescribed standards in preparing the delicious food and must mention the GI mark on the package and they have to apply for renewal of the certificate after 10 years.

The association had applied for the certificate last year and a detailed power point presentation on ‘Haleem' preparation was also sent. Later, a team of senior officials from Chennai visited the city and conducted a study before granting GI status.
