Jagadish Shivappa Shettar was sworn in as the 27th Chief Minister of
Karnataka on 12 July 2012. Shettar was administered the oath of the
office by Governor HR Bharadwaj at an oath taking ceremony held at Raj
Bhawan. KS Eshwarappa and R Ashoka,  two other BJP heavyweights in the
state, were sworn in as deputy chief ministers of the state. A total of
34 ministers took the oath of office. As per the constitution the
Karnataka can have a maximum of 34 ministers.
Shettar, 56, was unanimously chosen the leader of the BJP legislature
party following the resignation of DV Sadananda Gowda on 11 July 2012.
He is the third CM of state, within the period of 4 years.
Life has come full circle for Jagdish Shettar, another big leader
from the state’s influential Lingayat community (other one is BS
Yeddyurappa, the former Karnataka CM) as he finally moved to the office
of Chief Minister. Shettar had lost the race for the top job in the hand
of DV Sadananda Gowda in 2011. In a meeting of BJP legislature party
following the resignation of BS Yeddyurappa, Sadananda Gowda was
handpicked by BS Yeddyurappa to become the Chief Minister of the state
in August 2011.
